Why won't magnets stick to my fridge?
Magnets do not stick to every surface. This can be confusing because some surfaces look metallic but still do not attract magnets. The reason depends on the material underneath the surface.
Magnets Need Magnetic Metal
Magnets stick best to materials that contain iron or certain types of steel. These are called magnetic or ferromagnetic materials.
If a surface contains the right kind of steel, a magnet will usually stick. If it does not, the magnet will not hold.
Not All Metals Are Magnetic
Many metals are not magnetic. Magnets usually do not stick to aluminum, copper, brass, or many types of stainless steel.
This is why a surface can look shiny and metallic yet still not respond to magnets.
Stainless Steel Can Be Confusing

Some stainless steel fridges hold magnets, while others do not. Stainless steel comes in different types, and not all types are magnetic.
If your fridge does not hold magnets, it does not mean the magnet is broken. The appliance surface may simply not be magnetic.
Surface Texture Matters
Magnets work best on flat, clean surfaces. If a surface is curved, bumpy, textured, greasy, dusty, or wet, the magnet may slide or fall.
A stronger magnet may help, but the surface still needs to be suitable.
Magnet Strength Matters
Thin or small magnets may only hold themselves. Stronger magnets may hold papers or stay better on less ideal surfaces.
For photo magnets, the backing should be strong enough to support the finished piece's weight.
Good Surfaces for Photo Magnets
Photo magnets usually work well on magnetic fridges, lockers, filing cabinets, magnetic whiteboards, metal memo boards, and some steel cabinets.
They usually do not work on wood, glass, plastic, drywall, aluminum, or non-magnetic stainless steel.

Magnets work when the surface and the magnet are compatible. The surface must contain magnetic metal, the magnet must be strong enough, and the contact area should be clean and flat.
